Let’s do the Tweets!

Social media is a powerful tool for communicating science research.

But what’s the best way to use it?

Well, it’s pretty easy to get your work known on social media if you have a great project or research results and everything fits: You write a good text, post some remarkable photos and videos, and share something interesting whenever you feel like it.

However, this can prove to be a difficult task if you do not get a chance to use social media channels at all because of an army of trolls. Do not get me wrong – we have been there too. But you can maintain communication with your audience beyond this stage, and we’ll try different aspects of communication here.

What will you learn?

This workshop invites you to explore the power of social media, with a focus on communicating through Twitter and learn best practices on how to effectively communicate with your followers. To this end, we will discuss various methods, including an analysis of the benefits of communicating via Twitter for research dissemination. We will talk about dos and don’ts when communicating with your followers and how to avoid communication pitfalls.

Who is this training for?

The workshop is for scientists and especially for PhD students and postdocs, who have no or only elementary experience with social media communication.

TV Camera: fight or flight?

Pretty much everyone who has made a presentation knows how it feels to face a camera. It’s a nerve-racking experience.

How to write about science?

The workshop is based on the assumption that science has become an important part of modern society and that many journalists are interested in scientific topics.

Let’s do the tweets!

Social media is a powerful tool for communicating science research. But what’s the best way to use it?

The workshop invitation arrived just when I was reflecting on my presentation and communication skills. It made me aware of some of my mistakes beforehand. The workshop motivated me to become active on social networks so I posted a work highlight on LinkedIn, which yielded impressive results in terms of increased engagement. I’m considering expanding to Twitter as well. Overall, the workshop helped me tremendously with media communication and social networking.
