How to pitch your research to the media?

#communication #storytelling #pitching #media

Scientific research is really important, there is no doubt about that. It helps us improve our lives and the world in general. There are lots of great research projects out there, maybe you’re working on it yourself, or someone you know is, or you’ve heard of a cool thing going on in some lab.

But how do you get your science out into the world?

One way is to get your research into the media. From newspapers to radio to television to podcasts and social networks, the media is a great way to get the word out about your work.

But, it’s not easy, there is so much competition. Also, journalists, reporters, and editors are under deadline pressure and don’t have time to read about your research results, numbers, formulas or statistics in detail. So, how can you grab their attention?

Everyone loves a good story. We’ve been telling stories since people started talking to each other. However, when you present your work to the media, it’s about more than just a compelling story. Every little detail matters when crafting your story – right down to your choice of words.

What will you learn?

In this workshop, you will learn how to improve your message and get others interested in your work. We’ll discuss choosing the perfect medium for presenting your research findings to the media. The two of us have learned a ton about what works and what doesn’t for pitching. While there are no guarantees that your pitch will get picked up, there are techniques you can use to increase your chances.

Who is this training for?

This workshop is for scientists, researchers and research managers at different stages of advancement and from any discipline, especially those who are conducting EU and international projects or developing patents and seeking industry partners for whom media dissemination is a must.

TV Camera: fight or flight?

Pretty much everyone who has made a presentation knows how it feels to face a camera. It’s a nerve-racking experience.

How to write about science?

The workshop is based on the assumption that science has become an important part of modern society and that many journalists are interested in scientific topics.

Let’s do the tweets!

Social media is a powerful tool for communicating science research. But what’s the best way to use it?

The workshop invitation arrived just when I was reflecting on my presentation and communication skills. It made me aware of some of my mistakes beforehand. The workshop motivated me to become active on social networks so I posted a work highlight on LinkedIn, which yielded impressive results in terms of increased engagement. I’m considering expanding to Twitter as well. Overall, the workshop helped me tremendously with media communication and social networking.
